While embarking on implementing our Campus Landscape Master Plan for Lambton College, we are currently working on the detailed design for new Gateways to mark the formal entries leading into the campus.
The style, forms and materials of the original campus buildings, that were built in the late 1960s, were the inspirations to push forward with a robust aesthetic to create gateway landmarks that needed to be forward-looking and place-making signature features with scale, mass and a strong visual presence.
Angular and sloped concrete walls wedged into the ground plane emerge and descend amidst expansive swirling planting beds with a stylized meadow aesthetic. The walls are rhythmically segmented into varying sized panels with open slots that lighten the mass and afford a sense of transparency. The angled slots are to be up-lit to provide visual prominence during the evening hours with illuminated branding signage integrated into the top of the walls to afford a seamless and layered structure.
A sculptural Architectural Banner is proposed within the median at the London Road Gateway to balance and link the overall composition of the framing gateway walls with an unfurling-like structure to represent the Lambton College brand. Individual panels to be illuminated with integral LED lighting will animate the framework and achieve varying colourful displays to honour college events and world wide celebrations.
As we proceed to collaborate with the stakeholders to complete the design, we are excited about the potential the gateways will contribute to announcing the college’s spirit and elevate the brand, identity and meaning to become signature landmarks for Lambton College as well as for the community.
