Perched atop a steep hillside overlooking the Thames River’s south branch basin in the city’s east end, the senior’s retirement residence called for distinct landscape responses to the challenging site-specific conditions. 

Along the narrow frontage a grassed plateau with a series of entry access routes is reinforced with courtyard walls and a River Birch tree grove. The descent towards the residence’s side entrance is terraced to provide space for vegetable garden plots to be implemented in the future. With limited space the landscape exploits colourful blooming trees, shrubs and perennials that encompass the side drop-off area, parking lot and river basin overlook.
