An expansive property with an established ‘park-like’ landscape required re-thinking and new interventions with a requested French landscape emphasis. The master plan envisioned a meandering driveway to reduce the negative impacts from the busy road and purposeful tree-lines, hedges and specimen trees leading to the front entrance. The implemented landscape includes a formalized French entry garden and courtyard composed of lavender, boxwood, lilac, rose standard, and ornamental pear. Bordering the edge of the backyard, a gravel boules court, defined by dry-laid stone seatwalls, is organized by a London planetree allée and balanced at opposite ends by a fire pit terrace and a large sculptural urn. A naturalized pond with a ‘sugar shack’ pavilion counters the elegance of the formal landscape elements offering a habitat for wildlife and winter skating recreation. The perimeter edges are reinforced with a combination of deciduous hedgerows and tall evergreen partitions while several collected follies are formulated amidst the property for a journey of discovery and enjoyment.
