Two sprawling parking lots tucked behind commercial establishments along the north side of Dundas Street in the Old East Village neighbourhood were in dire need of major infrastructure upgrades to improve their safety and functional conditions and also build on the rejuvenating public realm advancements underway in the community.
A reimagined landscape vision played a critical role to reinforce the overall appeal and perception of the parking lots with community spirit and pride. Tough drought tolerant plants that could withstand salt exposure and snow storage were selected to combat the demanding harsh conditions of parking lot maintenance. Marking the driveway entries, gateway walls adorned with ceramic tiles by the London Potters Guild are complemented by landscapes with varying colours and textures. An allee that frames the primary walkway off of Queens Avenue directs circulation to and from an alleyway link to Dundas Street. Weaving through a limestone screening surface and an Autumn Feather Reed Grass meadow is a River Birch grove that establishes a centralized, green, shady pavilion.
Defined wedge-shaped limestone screening surfaces that provide flexible circulation opportunities for pedestrians to navigate through the parking lot are countered by a tilted interlocking paver checkerboard plane that affords ample space for large delivery trucks to access the nearby OEV Grocer while also providing a defined place for staging outdoor events.
